이후, 도미하여 University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill의 department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering 에서 박사 학위 과정을 시작하여, 이듬해 Vanderbilt University 화학과로 옮긴후 Ned A. Porter 교수의 지도아래 항산화제와 지질과산화 (lipid peroxidation)의 생유기화학(bioorganic chemistry)에 대하여 박사학위를 취득하였다.
이후, 미국 San Diego 소재 The Scripps Research Institute 화학과의 Peter G. Schultz 교수 지도 아래 Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF)연구진과 함께 High Throughput Screening을 이용한 functional genomics 프로젝트를 수행하였다.

1995-2000, LG Life Sciences (LGLS), Dae-jon, Korea

Tae-gyu (Tag) Nam did his undergraduate and M. S. work at the College of Pharmacy, Seoul National University. Then, he worked in LG Life Sciences where he was involved in the development of Factive, the first Korean-made drug approved by US FDA. He has started his Ph.D. study at department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering in University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill in 2000. He continued his Ph.D. work at the department of Chemistry at Vanderbilt University with professor Ned A. Porter on the bioorganic chemistry of antioxidants.
Next, he joined Peter G. Schultz group in The Scripps Research Institute for postdoctoral studies where he carried out a couple of functional genomics projects by using High Throughput Screening (HTS) technology in the collaboration with scientists from Genomics Institute of the Novartis Research Foundation (GNF). In 2011, after two year works on HTS-based drug discovery projects at Gyeonggi Bio-Center (GGBC), he joined the faculty of Hanyang University where he is currently an assistant professor of Pharmacy.
